Ever wonder what inspired an artwork?
This is the very first painting I produced before I eventually committed to my current project, which explores how ageing is viewed by ourselves and others. I became concerned about how the press and adverts continually impose an ever youthful and bland idea of beauty, totally ignoring the beauty that comes with every line, blemish or scar. I began to look more closely at how plants age, hoping to use images like these as a metaphor for my work. This painting was the first macro image where I highlighted the rich varied palette that comes with age, defining the wonderful beauty that only ageing brings.
